Westbound SUNSET |
Description: |
On the day after Christmas of 1973 the westbound SUNSET begins in 2200-mile trip to California, as it makes its way under the South Claiborne Avenue overpass and out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The train has a classic A-B-B-A set of F-units, all in fresh and matching Amtrak paint. FP7 110, F7B's 163 and 162, and FP7 114 are all former Southern Pacific units, and are no strangers to this run. |

Amtrak Train No. 1 |
Description: |
Amtrak’s westbound SUNSET was pulling out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal right on time at one o’clock in the afternoon with an A-A-B-A set of former Southern Pacific F-units and nine cars. The first three locos: FP7A 113 (ex-6449), FP7A 110 (ex-6446) and F7B 161 (ex-8291), were freshly-painted in Amtrak colors, while the last unit, FP7 6459, still looked like an SP engine; but it would soon become Amtrak 122. The train consisted of baggage car 1102, hi-level coaches 9920, 9932 and 9900, dormitory-bar-lounge car 3394, Northern Pacific diner 463, and sleeping cars 2361 REGAL CITY, 2635 PACIFIC SPRAY and 2608 PACIFIC CREST. |
