Southbound ICG
Title:  Southbound ICG
Description:  In 1973, the year after the ICG merger, GM&O GP38 721 and GP38-2 744 lead a southbound train past the Bogalusa depot on its way to South Yard. After the merger, the ICG discontinued the regular operation of a through train from Bogalusa south to New Orleans; so almost all of the rail traffic moving into Bogalusa came in from the north on trains like this. ICG No. 33
Title:  ICG No. 33
Description:  On 10 August 1972, the day of the Illinois Central-Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger, the ICG discontinued the regular operation of former GM&O trains 32 and 33 between Bogalusa and New Orleans; but the trains continued to run occasionally to serve a customer at the south end of the former GM&O Canal Yard. In this view taken shortly after the merger, No. 33 was entering the main line of the Southern Railway just south of the Slidell depot, to continue its trip to New Orleans. The roof of the depot can be seen right behind the loco.

This ICG trainman had previously lined the spring switch (SS) for the siding, to comply with the "Five-Minute-Rule" and once the time was up he threw it again just as his train was about to enter the main line. Setting the switch for the siding five minutes before the train entered the main line made nearby signals go red, and this prevented mainline trains from colliding with No. 33. We know this was shortly after the ICG merger because the train was short and it wasn't running extra. Once Nos. 32 and 33 were removed from the Southern timetable, these occasional trains would have to run as extras. (approximate date)

GM&O GP38AC 727
Title:  GM&O GP38AC 727
Description:  Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38AC 727 was parked under the REBEL SHED at CANAL YARD in New Orleans, between GP35’s 616 and 636. The shed had provided a convenient place to service the REBEL streamliner, which began running in 1935, and it also protected the train so it didn’t sit out in the sun all day. The REBEL stopped serving New Orleans in 1954, but the shed survived until the end of CANAL YARD’s existence about 20 years later. GM&O 727 became ICG 9546, then IC 9546. then Helm Leasing (HLCX) 3678 and then United States Sugar 404. (approximate date of photo)
