KCS No. 53 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern train No. 53 originated in Dallas and terminated at the CSX on the east side of New Orleans. The train got from the KCS to the CSX by operating over the Norfolk Southern for about six miles. In this shot, an NS yard crew was relieving the KCS road crew at the Labarre Road grade crossing in the suburb of Metairie for the trip to Louisa Street, where a CSX crew would bring the train into their yard. At this time No. 53 frequently ran with two geeps and a road slug, but this train had GP40’s 751, 784 and 755. |

KCS GP40 784 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern GP40 784 was on train No. 53 as it was heading east across the New Orleans area over the Norfolk Southern, on its way from the KCS to the Seaboard System’s GENTILLY YARD. Notice the extra 800-gallon fuel tank which the KCS had added between the front truck and the original 2600-gallon tank. The 784 had been built in February 1967 as Illinois Central 3048 (EMD 32868) and was acquired by the KCS in April 1982, after its initial 15-year lease expired. In 1991 the KCS sent it to Morrison- Knudsen as partial payment for upgrading 16 GP40’s into GP40M-2’s 4780-4795. M-K sold it to Helm in March 1996 and it went AMF in Montreal, where it was remanufactured into GP38M-3 number 61 for the Roberval & Saguenay Railway in December 1996. |

KCS Meet |
Description: |
KCS trains 55 - in the foreground - and 54 were parked across from one another on the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co. at the Labarre Road Grade crossing in suburban Metairie. No. 55 had GP40-2 799, F7B slug 4077 and GP40 786. It originated in Dallas and was on its way to the Southern's OLIVER YARD. No. 54 had GP40-2 797, F7B slug 4076 and GP38-2 4002. It originated at the Seaboard System's GENTILLY YARD here in New Orleans and was on its way to Dallas. A Southern crew had brought the train over the NOTCO five miles from L&N Junction, and the same crew would head back east with No. 55. A KCS station wagon has come over from their nearby WEST YARD with a road crew for No. 54, and would return to the yard with the crew off of No. 55. KCS and Southern cordiatd the departure of No. 54 from L&N Junction with the arrival of No. 55, so scenes like this occurred regularly. |

In July 1991 KCS sent the 786 to Morrison Knudsen’s MOUNTAINTOP LOCOMOTIVE SHOP in Pennsylvania to have its prime mover swapped with the 4748, which was then upgraded into GP40M-2 4782. The 786 remained at Mountaintop and was finally scrapped in March 1996. |

KCS GP40 794 |
Description: |
Here is an 800-gallon auxiliary fuel tank on Kansas City Southern GP40 794, previously Illinois Central Gulf 3058. It was located between the front truck and the 2600-gallon factory-installed fuel tank. The "60-17" stencil on the truck would indicate that the locomotive was still fitted with 76 MPH gearing, and not the usual 62-15 65 MPH gear ratio. The KCS installed these tanks on at least seven of the 19 ex-ICG GP40's it purchased in 1981. |

Kansas City Southern 794 was previously Illinois Central Gulf 3058 and was photographed at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. It was one of 19 former IC/ICG GP40's acquired in 1982, when they came off lease. All but one of those units arrived with 2600-gallon fuel tanks, but the KCS has added an 800-gallon auxiliary fuel tank added between the 794's front truck and the as-built tank. |
