SP 2702 and 2703 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific 2702 and 2703 were the first MP15AC units ever built, placed in service on 27 August 1975. Here they were three months later, interchanging cars with the Illinois Central Gulf at the Espee's EAST BRIDGE YARD, next to the east end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE. The headlight in the distance was a Southern Railway geep making a delivery to the Missouri Pacific in the New Orleans Public Belt's EAST BRIDGE YARD, just off to the right. |

Shrewsbury Road |
Description: |
Two sets of light power wait on the Norfolk Southern BACK BELT for a route through East Bridge Junction. Both sets are probably headed to their respective yards at Avondale, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. SP MP15AC's 2702 and 2703 are returning from the Norfolk Southern's Oliver Yard, while MP 3291, UP 4277, MP 3125 and UP 3265 -- all SD40-2's -- are on their way back from the CSX's Gentilly Yard. SP 2702 and 2703 were the very first MP15AC units built by EMD, and the first dozen of these began their careers in south Louisiana. Although initially operated in cab-to-cab sets, nose-to-nose operation was later adopted. |

SP Transfer Run |
Description: |
At 6:15 on a midsummer evening, the engineer on Southern Pacific MP15AC 2704 was easing back to pick up his caboose - Cotton Belt 60 - in the New Orleans Public Belt's COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. The caboose was still coupled to the 19-car transfer run he had just brought over from his railroad's AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE; and he was now coupling up so he could return home with this 12-car train. The two tracks on the left were the Illinois Central Gulf's north- and southbound main lines; while the structure on the left was the PUBLIC GRAIN ELEVATOR, facing the Mississippi River. Notice the stored NOPB box cars on the right and in the left background. |

Bridge Meet |
Description: |
For many years, both the MP and the SP weren't particular about the power they used for transfer runs across the Huey P. Long Bridge... almost any old units would do. But in 1975, both railroads assigned brand new EMD switchers to yard and transfer service around New Orleans. Here, 2-month old SP MP15AC's 2705 and 2706 on an eastbound transfer run meet 8-month old MP MP15DC 1549 -- along with GP18 1963, MP15DC 1551 and GP38-2's 2060 and 2075 -- on a westbound grain train. |

Description: |
Southern Paacific MP15AC units 2713, 2705 and 2710 were shoving Southern Pacific cab 1846 and 94 cars of Illinois coal up the Huey P. Long Bridge. Up front were consecutively-numbered Cotton Belt SD45T-2's 9274 and 9273 along with Southern Pacific SD45 8827. The coal originated on the Illinois Central Gulf and was headed for Mexico. |

SP MP15AC 2706 |
Description: |
The Southern Pacific loved 1500-horsepower EMD switchers! After buying 240 SW1500's and 12 MP15DC's, the railroad was the first customer for the MP15AC. Between August and October 1975 SP received 58 units,!2702-2759, and the first dozen were assigned to Avondale Yard near New Orleans; although a few of these were used elsewhere across southern Louisiana. Although usually used in pairs and trios, here we see five of the new units -- 2706, 2709, 2708, 2702 and 2703 -- on a westbound transfer run approaching the Huey P. Long Bridge at Central Avenue. The locomotives are literally clean enough to eat off of! These would be the last switch engines purchased by the railroad. |

SP MP15AC 2710 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific MP15AC 2710 -along with the 2704 - and Cotton Belt caboose 60 were in the New Orleans Public Belt's COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. They had just arrived with a transfer run from the Espee's AVONDALE YARD on the west side of the Mississippi River, and were preparing to return with a westbound train. All of those orange box cars and intermodal cars were unwanted NOPB incentive per diem cars. In this view, the river is just off to the right, and the water tower on the right of SP 2710 was in the Illinois Central Gulf's STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD. The silos on the right were a part of the port's Public Grain Elevator, which was right along the Mississippi. |

Engine Terminal |
Description: |
MP15AC 2712, four 1200-horsepower EMD, and a pair of GP9's populate the Espee's engine terminal at Lafayette. The yard here only needs a couple of switchers, so the other units will be used on the branches the originate here and at nearby New Iberia. |
