SP GP9 3007 |
Description: |
Recently-repainted Southern Pacific GP9 3007 was on the ready track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and was going to be the trailing unit on the westbound SUNSET. It was built in 1955 as the 5625 and was renumbered to the 3007 in the 1965 renumbering. At this time the unit still had dual cab controls, as shown by the wings on the long hood; but it lost its bi-directional controls when it was upgraded into GP9R 3190 in 1977. Amtrak SUNSET |
Description: |
Amtrak's westbound SUNSET was preparing to leave New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal behind an eclectic set of power: Southern Pacific dual-control passenger geeps 3008 and 3009, Union Pacific E9B 958B (later AMTK 469) and UP E9A 958 (AMTK 430). To the left of the 13-car train, at the former Railway Express building, were privately-owned ex-Illinois Central observation cars 3305 and 3300. |

Bump |
Description: |
On a foggy morning in October low-nose SP GP9 3712 pushes the ICG's New Orleans wreck train into the West High Curve of the Huey P. Long Bridge. Just beyond the wrecker, and on the opposite track, is SP GP9E 3387 and - sticking up in the air - SP caboose 1274. The 1274 was on the rear of a westbound train that was stuck on the bridge behind an MP train. For some reason, the MP could not take their train into their yard; so the SP decided to send some engines over from the east side of the river and pull their train back off of the bridge. Anyhow, it was a dark and foggy night, and SP 3387 coupled into the 1274 just a little too hard, causing it to jack-knief like this; and now the ICG wrecker has come to make things right! |
