KCS Accident
Title:  KCS Accident
Description:  Nothing draws a crowd like an accident, and here was one along the Kansas City Southern about three miles west (railroad north) from this train’s destination at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. A southbound train with SD40-2 650 and SD40 622 had just hit a Dickies work clothes rental service truck at the intersection of Clearview Parkway and Airline Highway (U.S. 61) and was waiting for the state trooper (next to the coupler) to finish his investigation. Signor had been a team track along the KCS and its predecessors for over 50 years, but it disappeared in 1985 when the KCS began using a nearby ICG line and abandoned this track. The ICG had a grade separation at Clearview Parkway, which eliminated problems like this.

KCS SD40-2 652
Title:  KCS SD40-2 652
Description:  Kansas City Southern SD40-2 652 was the railroad's first gray locomotive, completed at Shreveport at the beginning of April 1988; and when it was photographed outside the diesel shop at West Yard almost two years alter, gray units were still pretty uncommon. The other locomotives in this set of SD40-2's were snoot 690, the 649 and snoot 679. Quartets of 6-axle power were really unusual in New Orleans.

KCS Train No. 53
Title:  KCS Train No. 53
Description:  Kansas City Southern train 53 - running as Extra 657 South - was crossing the entrance to the Airline Drive-In Theater about a mile from its destination at New Orleans' WEST YARD. The second unit was F9Am 4053, and when this photo was taken, F-units and older geeps had recently began running with SD's on the line into New Orleans. I was told this was a fuel conservation measure, but it also released SD's for use elsewhere on the railroad. Before long, the usual power became a trio of newer geeps or a GP-slug-GP set.

MP Trains
Title:  MP Trains
Description:  This photo is a bit fuzzy because it was made from a small section of a telephoto shot. It shows a pair of eastbound Missouri Pacific trains that were parked just west of the railroad's Avondale Yard, waiting to get in. On the left was Southern run-through train HNS (Houston-New Orleans to the Southern) with SD40-2 3239, SD45 3161 and SD40 3183; while next to it was an unidentified train with GP38-2 2251, U23B 4505 and GP38-2 2292. The next year the MP would merge with the UP and the Southern would merge with the Norfolk & Western, so scenes like this would soon disappear.
