MP Trains |
Description: |
This photo is a bit fuzzy because it was made from a small section of a telephoto shot. It shows a pair of eastbound Missouri Pacific trains that were parked just west of the railroad's Avondale Yard, waiting to get in. On the left was Southern run-through train HNS (Houston-New Orleans to the Southern) with SD40-2 3239, SD45 3161 and SD40 3183; while next to it was an unidentified train with GP38-2 2251, U23B 4505 and GP38-2 2292. The next year the MP would merge with the UP and the Southern would merge with the Norfolk & Western, so scenes like this would soon disappear. |

UP SD40-2 3251 |
Description: |
A 118-car transfer run from the Seaboard System to the Union Pacific has just changed crews at the Central Avenue grade crossing, and is about to begin climbing the Huey P. Long Bridge. The yellow UP Suburban on the left had just delivered the train's new crew. Carryalls from most of the city's railroads were a common sight here in the days before contract crew haulers and new interchange locations. The train had UP SD40-2 3251 and MP SD40 3076 with 118 cars, of which 84 were auto racks; so it was a VERY long train. The red tank car on the left was the New Orleans Public Belt's fire car for the bridge. |

Just five weeks later - when the World's Fair opened on on 12 May - trains began using the NS to get from the MP to the Seaboard System and no longer used this route. |

Eastbound Rocket Train |
Description: |
Union Pacific SD40-2 3316 was powering an eastbound ROCKET TRAIN on the CSX at the Louisa Street grade crossing in New Orleans. A Norfolk Southern crew had just brought the train about 10 miles from the Kansas City Southern and now a CSX crew was on board. The space shuttle rocket motor sections were on their way from the Morton-Thiokol plant at Corinne, Utah to the KENNEDY SPACE CENTER at Cape Canaveral, Florida via the UP to Kansas City, KCS to Shreveport, CSX to Jacksonville, FEC to Titusville, and they completed their journey on NASA’s own railroad. The 8-axle ROCKET CARS usually moved in regular trains, but loaded cars sometimes ran as special movements like this. The train consisted of MP covered hopper 722984, SCL rocket car 109103, KCS rocket car 710032, MP covered hopper 710787, UP rocket car 50031, UP covered hopper 74487, UP rocket car 50021, UP covered hopper 221345, MP caboose 13060, and private car 800313 VIRGINIA CITY. The covered hoppers and the first rocket car were empty "buffer" cars.UP 3316 was an unusual long-nose SNOOT unit, with an interesting history. It was built in July 1976 as the 8046, one of 100 UP SD40-2's specially equipped with 59:18 (80 mph) high-speed gearing. In August 1980 it was refitted with regular 62:15 (65 mph) gearing and renumbered 3316. In April 1996 it received a special paint scheme for use on the UP's Olympic Torch Relay Train and was renumbered 1896; then, in November of that year, it was repainted back into the standard UP paint scheme and renumbered 3100, and on 6 November 2002 it was renumbered UP 3097. |

MP SD40-2 6016 |
Description: |
Between 1976 and 1980 the Missouri Pacific purchased 74 SD40-2's for use on unit coal trains. The obvious difference from the railroad's other SD40-2's was the dynamic brake housing, but the first 20 units - such as this one - were also equipped with a nose-mounted oscillating light so as to be compatible with D&RGW power. These 20 units were delivered as the 3216-3235, and then renumbered 6000-6019 in May 1978, while the other 54 coal units were delivered new as the 6020-6073. All of them became Union Pacific 3900-3973. |

A empty DEGX coal train rolls north along the Mississippi Export at Agricola, Mississippi; about half way between the railroad's end points of Pascagoula and Evanston. The train is crossing Mississippi Highway 613 and passing the Temple Baptist Church. Motive power is a quartet of Missouri Pacific SD40-2's: 6050, 6019, 6025 and 6006. Unlike most MP locomotives, all of these have dynamic brakes and were bought specifically for coal train service. The train is on its way from Mississippi Power's DANIEL ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT (thus the DEGX reporting marks on the cars) at Escatawpa to Colorado via the Mississippi Export-Evanston-Illinois Central Gulf-Memphis-Missouri Pacific-Pueblo-Rio Grande. |
