Title:  IC 4-8-2 2405
Description:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 2405 was parked at the railroad’s GOVERNMENT YARD in New Orleans, just north of Union Station. It was one of 15 Mountains built for the IC by Alco’s Schenectady Works (64574) in October 1923 and was retired in February 1960, near the very end of steam operations on the IC. The loco on the left was 0-6-0 295.

Title:  IC Train No. 22
Description:  Illinois Central mail-and-express train No. 22 – the NORTHERN EXPRESS – was making its way out of New Orleans behind 4-8-2 2405. No. 22 was probably accelerating away from its stop at South Carrollton Avenue and was on its way north. (approximate date of photo)

IC Train No. 22
Title:  IC Train No. 22
Description:  Illinois Central mail-and-express train No. 22 had just pulled out of Union Station in New Orleans and was about to cross South Claiborne Avenue. The train was passing a long-time landmark, the Louisiana Grain Corporation’s former J.T. Gibbons NEW BASIN ELEVATOR, while the building on the left with the hip roof was the IC company hospital at 714 Magnolia Street. Both of these buildings were razed around 1970 to make way for the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME. Locomotive 2445 was a 4-8-2 which had been built by Alco in 1926 and was retired in 1960. Title:  IC Train No. 22
Description:  Illinois Central mail-and-express train No. 22 was just getting under way at Union Station in New Orleans behind 4-8-2 2451. The train was leaving from one of two temporary platforms, as work was underway to replace Union Station with New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Union Station was standing in the background, but it and would be torn down in January 1954 and NOUPT formally opened that April. IC 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926 and was scrapped in 1955. Title:  IC 4-8-2 2451
Description:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 2451 had just passed through Government Yard and was about to cross South Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans. The train was unidentified, but it was probably No. 25 - the SOUTHERN EXPRESS. No. 25 originated in Chicago at 12:20 A.M. and only made five stops util it got to Champaign, then it became an all-stops local and was scheduled into New Orleans at 11:30 A.M., after 35 hours on the road. This train was just a few minutes away from its destination at Union Station. Notice the green diamond emblem on the right side of the water tower. The 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926, was rebuilt by the railroad with a new boiler in 1945 and was scrapped in 1955. (approximate day of photo)

IC Train No. 22
Title:  IC Train No. 22
Description:  Illinois Central train No. 22, the all-stops overnight local for Memphis, was nearing its 5:30 p.m. departure from Union Station in New Orleans behind 4-8-2 2451. The train could make up to 47 stops before its scheduled arrival in Memphis at 9:05 the next morning. On 26 April 1954 train No. 22 was replaced by New Orleans-Chicago train No. 4, the LOUISIANE, which left at 11:00 a.m. The 2451 had been built by Alco in 1926, was rebuilt by the railroad with a new boiler in 1945 and was scrapped in 1955. The roof of Union Station can be seen in the right background. It was torn down in early 1954 to create a plaza in front of the new New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  Missouri Pacific 4-8-2 5311 was outside the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans’ RACE STREET YARD engine house. The locomotive had been built by Alco (62984) at Schenectady in April 1921 and was retired in July 1952. A Texas & Pacific 4-6-2 was in the house behind the 5311 and TPMPT S1 number 4 was in the background on the right. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  Missouri Pacific Lines 4 8 2 5315 was parked outside of the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans engine house at RACE STREET YARD in New Orleans. Texas & Pacific 4 6 2 720 and an unidentified TPMPT Alco switch engine were on the other side, while an unidentified T&P Pacific was inside the house behind the 5315. The 5315 was retired at North Little Rock in January 1955.

AUDUBON PARK is on the left and the Mississippi River is off to the right. The 5315 was retired at North Little Rock in January 1955.

Title:  MP Extra 5315 East
Description:  Missouri Pacific MT-73 class 4-8-2 5315 and a water car were on an Extra East running over the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad’s eastbound main track behind AUDUBON PARK in New Orleans, about five miles from its destination at the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans’ RACE STREET YARD. The two tracks on the right belonged to the Illinois Central, while the Mississippi River was just behind the trees on the left. The locomotive had been built at Alco’s Schenectady Works in January 1923 for heavy-duty passenger service, but by this time it had been demoted to run-of-the-mill freight trains. It was retired in January 1955.
