Title:  NOPSI 801
Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 801 was stopped at the temporary end of the ST. CHARLES car line, on South Carrollton Avenue at Dixon Street. The was the end of the line from 8 January 1951, when the ST. CHARLES / TULANE belt line was discontinued, until 10 August 1952, when it was relocated down South Carrollton to South Claiborne. JIM’S PLACE, a restaurant and bar known for its fried chicken, was right across the street at 3832 South Carrollton. The 801 had been built by Brill in 1922 and was scrapped in April 1953. Title:  NOPSI 803
Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 803 was outbound on the ST. CHARLES line in the 600-block of St. Charles Avenue, across from LAFAYETTE SQUARE. On the other side of the car was the SOULE COLLEGE building, and next to it was the IMPERIAL HOTEL, which was used exclusively by away-from-home railroaders. Soule College moved out in 1923 and closed in 1983, but this building was still standing in 2020. Car 803 had been built by the JG. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in June 1964.

Description:  New Orleans Public Service streetcar 804 was outbound on the ST. CHARLES line on St. Charles Avenue at Octavia Street, having just passed the OCTAVIA apartment building. The streetcar was built in 1922 and scrapped in June 1964, after the original CANAL car line closed; while the OCTAVIA was built in 1907 and is still standing in 2020. (approximate date of photo)

NOPSI Carrollton Station
Title:  NOPSI Carrollton Station
Description:  New Orleans Public Service ST. CHARLES line streetcars 806 and 965, and TULANE line trolley buses 1171, 1202 and 1189 were parked at Carrollton Station in May 1954. Car 806 had been built by Brill in 1922 and was scrapped in February 1955, less than a year after this photo was taken; while car 965 was built by Perley Thomas in 1924 and has never been retired. The buses had been built by the St. Louis Car Co. in early 1952 for the new TULANE line and was among the last NOPSI trolley buses in service. The 1171 was retired in December 1964, when diesel buses took over the last two trolley bus lines (TULANE and CITY PARK); but the other two were not retired until March 1967 and were among 33 SLC trolley buses sold for operation in Mexico City. NOPSI 809
Title:  NOPSI 809
Description:  New Orleans Public Service streetcar 809 was operating on the TULANE BELT on South Carrollton Avenue at the New Basin Canal drawbridge. Streetcars stopped using this bridge on 9 January 1951, when the BELT LINES were discontinued; and the 809 was scrapped in April 1953. On the far right was PELICAN STADIUM, home of the New Orleans Pelicans minor league baseball team from 1915 until the end of the 1957 season. The stadium was torn down in October 1957 and the land used for the construction of a large motel. The team played at CITY PARK STADIUM for two more years and then the franchise was sold to Little Rock. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 809 was outbound on Willow Street, on its way from CARROLLTON STATION to the outer end of the SOUTH CLAIBORNE line. The car had window screens, which had been added to some cars after WWII which typically ran on the TULANE and ST. CHARLES belts. The car had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in April 1953. (date of photo is unknown)

Title:  NOPSI Streetcars at Carrollton Station
Description:  New Orleans Public Service streetcars 810, 853, 841 and 840 were at Carrollton Station, displaying either ST. CHARLES or TULANE route signs. All of these cars had been built in 1922, the 810 and 853 by Brill, and the 841 and 840 by Perley A. Thomas, and all were scrapped between 1951 and 1955. The last day of operation for the ST. CHARLES and TULANE belt lines was 7 January 1951. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  New Orleans Public Service streetcar 811 was outbound on the TULANE BELT on Loyola Street (now South Saratoga Street) at Cleveland Avenue. TULANE cars operated on Loyola Street for two blocks, from Canal Street to Tulane Avenue, until they were replaced by trolleybuses on 8 January 1951. The large building behind the car was a part of the former Elks Lodge at 127 Elks Place, and originally contained an auditorium and a swimming pool; while the building on the very left was the Krauss Department Store at 1201 Canal Street. Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 812 was inbound on the ST. CHARLES BELT. The car had just turned left from Tulane Avenue onto South Liberty Street, and in two blocks it would turn right onto Canal Street. The bunting with the trophy on the corner building showed that it might have been SUGAR BOWL season! Much of the area in this photo is unrecognizable today; but the tall building in the background – the JUNG HOTEL at 1500 Canal Street – is still there. Car 812 had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in April 1953. (date of photo is unknown)

Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 816 was inbound on the ST. CHARLES LINE at Lee Circle. This view is looking down Howard Avenue towards the Mississippi River. The white building on the left was the headquarters of the Standard Fruit & Steamship Co., and to the right of that was the Howard Memorial Library building which was then the offices of radio station WTPS. When this photo was taken only about 20 of the 800-series cars were still around, as most had been scrapped because many NOPSI streetcar lines were discontinued after WWII. The 816 operated until the original CANAL LINE closed in 1964, and was scrapped that June.

Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 825 was inbound on the ST. CHARLES line as it turned from South Carrollton Avenue onto St. Charles. The car had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped less than a year after this photo, in February 1955. The monument to the right of the 825 is the Samuel Loewenberg Memorial. Mr. Loewenberg was a Prussian immigrant who was in the garment business, and the monument was donated to the City by his wife Rosa after his death in 1907. (approximate date of photo)

It was wearing the window screens that were added to many of the TULANE and ST. CHARLES cars in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. These were used to protect riders from the vegetation along the line, but didn’t last long. Car 831 had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in October 1951. The two cars had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922, while GALVEZ route bus 1707 – a White Model 788 - was brand-new. The smoke stacks on the other side of the Dixie Beer billboard were at a cement plant along the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal. (approximate day of the month)

Description:  New Orleans Public Service car 860 was inbound on the TULANE line on Canal Street, and was stopped at the intersection with St. Charles Avenue (on the left) and Royal Street (on the right). In this part of city, next to the French Quarter, many of the streets have different names on each side of Canal. The date of the photo isn’t known; but car 860 was damaged in a collision with a gas truck on 31 July 1950 and never ran again, so it has to predate that event. The TULANE car line was replaced with gasoline-powered buses on 8 January 1951. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  Two New Orleans Public Service vehicles were stopped on Willow Street at South Carrollton Avenue. LEONIDAS bus 1746 was a White Motor Co. MODEL 788 built in 1948 and was making a regular stop, while TULANE car 868 was on its way from the Carrollton Car Barn to South Carrollton Avenue. It had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in May 1952. Up until 6 December 1923 Willow Street had been named Poplar, which is why the theater on the left has that name. (unknown date of photo)

Description:  New Orleans Public Service streetcar 869 was outbound on the WEST END car line next to Greenwood Cemetery, about half way through its 6½-mile trip from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain. This location was also the end of the CANAL-CEMETERIES car line until that was moved to the corner of Canal Street and City Park Avenue, about two blocks away, on 20 August 1951. Car 869 had been built by Brill in 1922 and was scrapped in May 1952. Buses replaced the WEST END car line on 15 January 1950.

Description:  New Orleans Public Service Inc. cars were gathered at the foot of Canal Street, near the Mississippi River, awaiting their turn to depart. TULANE line car 410 was one of 50 cars built by the Southern Car Co. in 1915 for a predecessor of NOPSI. It had a CAR HOUSE sign up, and would be retired the next year; while CEMETERIES car 873 was built by Brill in 1922. Notice the clever "194-7UP" ad on the 410, while car 873 was promoting rival Royal Crown Cola.
