Amtrak No. 1
Title:  Amtrak No. 1
Description:  During the 1980 Christmas Season, Amtrak regularly leased Southern Pacific SD40T-2 units to assist pairs of SDP40F's on very long SUNSETS, and here is SP 8564 - along with Amtrak 511 and 518 - accelerating a westbound train out of Avondale Yard. By this time, most of the other western long-distance trains had been re-equipped with SUPERLINERS; so Amtrak was able to run 15-car SUNSETS, which was still steam heated, using some of the cars released from these other trains. Within a few months, the SUNSET itself would also receive SUPERLINERS, and it would never again operate with this many cars unless something REALLY special was going on!

Amtrak SDP40F 529
Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 529
Description:  SDP40F's weren't regularly used on the PANAMA LIMITED until June 1974, when new units 612-619 were assigned to the train; but at least three units from the original order (500-539) showed up when they were new in 1973. The first was the 514, which came in on 9 July 1973; followed by the 528 on 17 September and the 529 the next day. Here is the 529, along with E8A 205, on 19 Spetember; ready for this afternoon's northbound train to Chicago. Even though the locomotive is less than two months old, almost all of the black paint has peeled off of the pilot and fuel tank. This was a common occurance on units 500-539.

Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 539

Westbound SUNSET
Title:  Westbound SUNSET
Description:  Cruising along at 70 MPH, SDP40F's 551 and 557 were powering the westbound SUNSET LIMITED passed the "temporary" train order office at Raceland Junction, as the operator gave the train a roll-by inspection. Steam generator car 1918 was tucked in behind the locomotives, which was very unusual. This "temporary" office was placed here soon after a freight train derailment wrecked the previous depot on 10 June 1967 and it remained here for almost 18 years, until the introduction of Direct Traffic Control (DTC) on 18 February 1985 eliminated the need for any train order offices along the SUNSET ROUTE between New Orleans and El Paso.

Amtrak No. 1
Title:  Amtrak No. 1
Description:  SDP40F 559 was smoking it up as it and the 555 got Amtrak train No. 1 - the westbound SUNSET - underway at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on Christmas Eve 1976. The 13-car train consisted of baggage car 1088, coach 5236, four high-level coaches 9927, 9941, 9949 and 9920, dormitory-lounge 3395, diner 8041, four sleepers 2762 PALM VIEW, 2366 REGAL PASS, 2501 BLUE GROVE and 2602 PACIFIC BEAUTY, and dome-sleeper-observation 9250 SILVER HORIZON. Southern Pacific units regularly smoked like this after sitting in New Orleans for 16 hours, but it was very unusual for an SDP40F to do this.

Amtrak Trains 59 and 1
Title:  Amtrak Trains 59 and 1
Description:  Four one-year-old SDP40F units were side-by-side at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 613 and 619 had just backed in with Train 59 - the southbound PANAMA LIMITED - while the 571 and 568 were waiting to leave at 1:00 with Train 1 – the westbound SUNSET. You could tell that the 571 was originally assigned to the SAN FRANCISCO ZEPHYR by the icicle breakers above its cab! The 613’s red emergency brake light was still on, and momentarily the PANAMA's power would head for the engine terminal where the crew would go off duty. (approximate date)

Peanut Special
Title:  Peanut Special
Description:  For the inauguration of Jimmy Carter as president on 20 January 1977, the Carter Campaign Committee chartered an 18-car train to bring supporters from Plains, Georgia to Washington and back. Even though the official trip originated and terminated at Plains, the train was assembled at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and dead-headed to Plains and back via the Louisville & Nashville and Seaboard Coast Line. Here is the train about 20 minutes after leaving NOUPT, stopped at the L&N's Gentilly Yard in eastern New Orleans. The water was being drained out of the locomotives' internal water tanks because of concern about the units' weight and the water sloshing around.

The PEANUT SPECIAL consisted of SDP40Fs 582, 595 and 588 with coaches 5404, 5475 and 5442; 11-bedroom sleepers 2252 STAR LEAF, 2263 PLACID LAKE and 2203 SILVER SWAN; 10-6 sleeper 2638 PACIFIC TRAIL, lounge 3409, dining room car 8800, kitchen-dormitory 8801, sleeper-lounge 3205 GULF STREAM, 11-bedroom cars 2201 SILVER QUAIL, 2250 STAR BAY, 2215 INDIAN MAID, 2211 INDIAN DRUM and 2214 INDIAN LAKE; and 10-6 sleepers 2626 PACIFIC PLATEAU and 2618 PACIFIC LODGE.

All of the train's trucks and underbody had just received a coat of fresh black paint at NOUPT. The train was made up of three coaches, four sleepers, a piano-lounge car, a full diner, a kitchen-dormitory car, a sleeper-lounge and seven more sleepers. It deadheaded to Plains, Georgia via the L&N and SCL so it could bring supporters of Jimmy Carter to his presidential inauguration in Washington on 20 January. After the inauguration it returned to Plains and then deadheaded back to New Orleans behind the 643, 588 and 595.

Amtrak PANAMA
Title:  Amtrak PANAMA
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 616 and a sibling power the northbound PANAMA LIMITED out of New Orleans over New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal track. The debris along the track are the remnants of the platforms at the former Carrollton Avenue Station. The former inbound main line had been located to the right of the train, but was removed in around 1969. Signs such as the one on the right were placed on several of the communication poles along here so that engineers on inbound trains stopping at the station wouldn't block Carrollton Junction, where the NOUPT Eastern and Western Connections separated. When NOUPT opened in 1954, the common use of train radios was still a decade or more in the future! (date approximate)
