GM&O (ICG) GP30 510 |
Description: |
Eight months after the Gulf Mobile & Ohio merged with the Illinois Central, former GM&O GP30 510 was parked by the sand tower at the little service area across from the former GM&O depot in Bogalusa. In the left background was a remnant of the shop buildings built here by the New Orleans-Great Norther Railroad. The ICG would eventually build a new engine house and service area at its yard on the south side of town, and the old shop area would become a shopping center named SHOP YARD SQUARE!. The 510 was never repainted as ICG 2260 and it was sold to the Paducah & Louisville in 1986. VMV rebuilt it into CSX slug 2264 in 1989.(approximate month and day) |

Southern Railfans |
Description: |
A couple of months before the Illinois Central–Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger a couple of railfbns from the south end of the GM&O (Jim Selzer from Slidell and Earl Hampton from New Orleans) headed north to document the railroad before it disappeared. Here, Jim Selzer was observing the engines at the railroad’s shop in Venice, Illinois. Of particular interest was the 950, which had been built as EMD SD40 prototype 434, on an SD35 frame. It was unique on the GM&O and had been purchased in July 1966 to replace wrecked GP35 614. The GM&O and the ICG may be gone, but the 950 lives at the Monticello Railway Museum as IC 6071. AKDN GP30 701 |
Description: |
Acadiana Railway GP30 701 was built in February 1963 as Union Pacific 701, frame no. 7648-2. This was the fourth UP diesel to wear this number; the previous examples were a Fairbanks-Morse ERIE-BUILT A-unit from March 1948 until February 1953, a GP7 from February until November 1953 and a GP20 from July 1960 until December 1962. The 701 was one of the last GP30’s on the UP roster. It was retired on 28 July 1989 and was leased to the City of Mineral Wells, Texas three months later for service on the city owned, 22-mile long, Mineral Wells & Eastern Railroad. This line was formerly the UP/MP/T&P‘s Weatherford, Mineral Wells & Northwestern subsidiary. The 701 was sold to the city on 7 February 1990, but the railroad closed in May 1992 and the locomotive was resold to the Acadiana Railway by mid-March 1993. |

In the foregound was Montegut Street, while the Southern Railway's Oliver Yard was on the other side of the L&N's track. This L&N line was built in the early 1950's as a part of the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal Project, to provide it with continued access to its trackage along the Mississippi River while allowing it to remove its line on the median of Elysian Fields Avenue. One of the L&N's successors, either the Seaboard System or the CSX, abandoned this line in the 1980's |

AKDN GP30 3018 |
Description: |
Acadiana Railway GP30 3018 had been built in February 1963 as Denver & Rio Grande Western 3018. It was retired on 7 May 1996 and sold by the Union Pacific to Metro East Industries at East St. Louis, Illinois, in 1997. From there, it moved on to Larry's Truck Electric Service in Ohio before February 1998 and then to the Acadiana Railway in December 1998. The Acadiana had LTE repaint it into this green and yellow paint scheme, which was inspired by a former Chicago & North Western GP7 which the railroad had previously purchased from LTE. This was the Acadiana's second GP30; their first one was former Union Pacific 701 which they acquired in 1993. |

KCS Deramus Yard (6) |
Description: |
Members of the Kansas City Southern Historical Society were inspecting this unfortunate pair of GP30’s at Deramus Yard during the organization’s 1983 convention in Shreveport. On 28 December 1977 northbound KCS train 66 (running as Extra 4102 North) was en route from Alexandria to Minden, Louisiana with GP30's 4102 and 4116, when it hit a loaded log truck at the Vine St. grade crossing in Goldonna. Twenty-two cars derailed, including a tank car loaded with 31,000 gallons of LPG which ruptured and exploded. The two men on the 4102 did not survive and at least 10 others were injured, including a crew member on the caboose and the truck driver. |
