Title: MP (T&P) E7A 3
Description: Missouri Pacific (Texas & Pacific) E7A No. 3 was at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine zone, along with GP7 304. No. 3 had been built on 20 March 1947 as T&P 2002 and was renumbered circa 1963. The locomotives had come in on the TEXAS EAGLE - the overnight train from Fort Worth - and would return west at 8:30 P.M. MP and T&P E7 units were built with portholes instead of rectangular windows.

L&N HUMMINGBIRD
Title: L&N HUMMINGBIRD
Description: The Louisville & Nashville‘s HUMMINGBIRD was awaiting its departure from the railroad’s JULIA STREET YARD in New Orleans. The cars had been turned on the wye at GENTILLY YARD and serviced during their layover in the Crescent City. This was one of four sets of equipment built by American Car & Foundry between September and November 1946 for this train and the GEORGIAN. E7A 759 had been built in April 1945 as the 459A and was one of eight units delivered in this blue-and-aluminum paint scheme to match the new cars, but the engines and cars were repainted into standard blue L&N paint scheme beginning in 1950. The photograph was taken from Julia Street and the building on the left was the yard office.

L&N No. 6 from No. 99
Title: L&N No. 6 from No. 99
Description: This was the view from the cab of Louisville & Nashville Train 99 – the combined southbound PAN-AMERICAN and GULF WIND – as it met L&N Train 6 – the northbound HUMMING BIRD. The trains were on the Southern Railway at milepost N.O.T. 4 near EAST CITY JUNCTION in New Orleans. No. 6 had E7A units 761 and 780 with 8 cars and was due out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal at 8:15 AM, while No. 99 had E6A 770 and E7A 792 with 10 cars and was due into NOUPT at 9:20. The photo was taken at 8:31, so both trains were on time, as No. 99 had 50 minutes of padding in its schedule for the last seven miles of its trip, between the L&N-SOU connection at L&N JUNCTION and NOUPT.

L&N Train No. 9
Title: L&N Train No. 9
Description: Louisville & Nashville train No. 9 - the combined PAN AMERICAN from Cincinnati and GULF WIND from Jacksonville - was nicely-illuminated by the morning sun as it made its stop at Carrollton Avenue Station in New Orleans, about three miles and 10 minutes away from its destination at Union Passenger Terminal. Today's train consisted of E7A 780 and FP7 695 with 12 cars. No. 9 was running about 20 minutes late, so this rare image would been taken around 8:05.

After No. 9 arrived the next morning, the L&N discontinued operations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast in preparation for HURRICANE CAMILLE, which made landfall that night. The storm damaged 23 miles of track, together with signals and communication along 37 miles of the line. Full freight operation did not resume until 8 September, and passenger service began shortly after that. The tracks in the foreground were remnants of a Kansas City Southern yard.

L&N E7A 780
Title: L&N E7A 780
Description: It's Saturday 1 May 1971, and at midnight Amtrak had taken over or eliminated almost all of the country's long distance passenger trains. Louisville & Nashville E7A's 779 and 780 had just brought the very last L&N passenger train into New Orleans, and were resting at the NOUPT sand tower. In a couple of hours, they would back into the station and then leave with all of the L&N's passenger cars that were still there.

L&N E7A 781
Title: L&N E7A 781
Description: Louisville & Nashville E7A units 781 and 778 were on train 34, the northbound PIEDMONT at New Orleans. These units were two of eight E7A’s delivered in April 1945 as the 458AB-461AB – right above E6A units 450AB-457AB – and wore this unique blue-and-aluminum paint scheme for use on the new HUMMING BIRD and GEORGIAN streamliners. In late 1946 units 450A-461A were renumbered 750-761 and 450B-461B became 770-781; and at the same time, a reflectorized number plate was mounted above the front buffer. These plates remained until the units were remodeled with large number boxes and repainted into the standard blue-and-cream scheme.

SP 6060 and L&N 791
Title: SP 6060 and L&N 791
Description: The last Alco PA locomotives which routinely visited New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal were Southern Pacific 6060 and 6066. These units were originally Texas & New Orleans 200B and 205B, then 201 and 211, so they were no strangers to New Orleans. These locos, along with FP7 6462 (former Cotton Belt 306, ex-330), were the regular power on trains 5 and 6 between New Orleans and Houston during their last few years of operation. Nos. 5 and 6 were the last remnants of the ARGONAUT, which had operated all the way to Los Angeles until late 1957.

On this morning in April 1963 SP 6060 was parked next to the sand tower at NOUPT, along with Louisville & Nashville E7A 791. The L&N power had just arrived on train 33-99, the combined PIEDMONT-PAN AMERICAN-GULF WIND, while the 6060 was waiting to depart on Train No. 5 at 10:30 a.m. The 6060 was sold to GE as credit for a U25B four months after this photo was taken, and Nos. 5 and 6 were discontinued the next month. The PAN AMERICAN-GULF WIND survived until the advent of Amtrak on 1 May 1971, and L&N 791 was retired in November 1971. That was the PANAMA LIMITED in the coach yard on the right. L&N No. 8 and SOU No. 47
Title: L&N No. 8 and SOU No. 47
Description: Southern Railway No. 47 – the SOUTHERNER from New York City – was sitting in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal next to Louisville & Nashville train No. 8 – the combined PAN-AMERICAN for Cincinnati and the GULF WIND for Jacksonville. The SOUTHERNER was due in at 7:10 PM while the L&N train was scheduled to leave at 8:45, so No. 47 must have arrived a little late this evening. Notice the altered lights on L&N 791. E6A 771 was the only other L&N E-unit like this, although E6A 756 and E7A 761 had their lower light changed. (approximate date of photo)

Title: NOUPT
Description: The water pouring out of the nose of Louisville & Nashville E7A 791 showed that the boiler water tanks were full as the unit was being serviced from the opposite side at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine facility. L&N E6 and E7 units which had been modified with enlarged boiler water capacity – 2,050 gallons instead on 1,050 – had nose-mounted water filler openings such as this. On the next track, NOUPT SW8 number 1 was moving a set of Illinois Central power which included E6A 4003. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Julia Street Yard
Title: L&N Julia Street Yard
Description: This image shows the variety of motive power that could be found at the Louisville & Nashville's Julia Street Yard during the transition from steam to diesel. Pictured here were K-4 Pacific 269 (Baldwin 1923) with commuter train No. 12, J-3 Mikado 1591 (Alco 1923), E7A 792 (EMD 1949), and Alco S1 57 (Alco 1949). The yard was about three blocks south of the railroad’s Canal Street Station, and packed into an area of about four square blocks were a freight yard, coach yard, enginehouse, turntable, freight houses and warehouses. The coach yard was on the extreme right of this photo. (approximate month and day)

LADY BIRD SPECIAL
Title: LADY BIRD SPECIAL
Description: From 6 through 9 October 1964, less than one month before the presidential election between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Senator Barry Goldwater, the president’s wife Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson rode on a 19-car campaign train from Washington D.C. to New Orleans via Jacksonville. I managed to see the train, quite by accident, on its way into New Orleans at Canal Blvd. and had no idea what it was until I saw the red-white-and-blue observation car lettered LADY BIRD SPECIAL. I wasn’t much of a railroad photographer back then, and it was dark when I saw it; but Phillip Kotheimer shot the train earlier that afternoon in Mobile, while its three E-units were being refueled from a tank truck just south of the station.

L&N No. 9
Title: L&N No. 9
Description: On the afternoon of 18 September 1970 Louisville & Nashville train 9 – the southbound PAN-AMERICAN – was crossing Industrial Parkway in eastern New Orleans with E7A 793 and one coach. The reason for this unusually brief consist isn’t known, but the train was running about six hours late! Sometimes the L&N ran a train like this from Flomaton, Alabama to New Orleans if the GULF WIND from Jacksonville missed its connection with No. 9; but on this day, this was the only L&N passenger train into New Orleans. The 793 went back north a few hours later on No. 8, with five cars.

L&N E-Units
Title: L&N E-Units
Description: Up until the mid-sixties trios of Louisville & Nashville E-units showed up every day at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, on the southbound GULF WIND - PIEDMONT - PAN AMERICAN and the northbound CRESCENT - PAN AMERICAN; but by 13 October 1970 this was VERY unusual. Also, when the L&N regularly ran three E-units together, the last unit almost ALWAYS faced backwards. E7A 793 and E8A 796 were built new for the L&N; while E8A 788 was originally Frisco 2014 named TRUXTON, and had been purchased by the L&N in 1965. An unidentified Illinois Central E-unit was parked by the sand tower, just in off of the PANAMA LIMITED.

L&N Train No. 8
Title: L&N Train No. 8
Description: Louisville & Nashville train No. 8 – the northbound PAN-AMERICAN – was leaving New Orleans shortly before it was discontinued on 1 May 1971. The train was operating over the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary through City Park, on its way from the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal’s EASTERN CONNECTION at EAST CITY JUNCTION (milepost NOT-3.4) to the L&N connection at L&N JUNCTION (M.P. NOT-6.9). The operator at EAST CITY JUNCTION TOWER had put No. 8 on the “wrong” (i.e., southbound) track because an eastbound Southern Pacific transfer run had just passed him and was occupying the northbound track. The Southern identified these tracks as north- and southbound, even though they ran from west to east! (approximate date of photo)

L&N E7A 798
Title: L&N E7A 798
Description: Louisville & Nashville E7A 798 was at the engine service area in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. This locomotive had been built on 9 May 1946 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois 1100, became Missouri Pacific 27 in 1968 and then L&N 798 in June 1969. A stencil on the other side of the unit showed that it had been painted at Mobile on 3 April 1970. The 798 stood out because it retained its original small number boxes, while all of the L&N’s other E7A units had large number boxes. It was retired in November 1971 and used as trade-in credit with EMD. (approximate date of photo)

Southern Train No. 48
Title: Southern Train No. 48
Description: Southern Railway train No. 48, the northbound SOUTHERNER, was about to begin its journey to New York City at TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. Locomotive 2922 was the last of 18 E7As built for the railroad in May 1946 and April 1949, and some of these had replaced the train’s original E6As. The first car was a baggage-dormitory-coach built by Pullman-Standard in 1941, while behind it was a one-year-old coach-bar-lounge built by Budd and used to provide accommodations for non-white passengers. The station was located on the median of Basin Street at 1125 Canal Street. (approximate date of photo)
