UP GP40 664 |
Description: |
On Sunday 15 December 1985 the Jefferson Historical Society and the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission hosted a ceremony to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE. The event was held at the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad’s bridge administration building, which was located at the bridge’s east traffic circle. The Union Pacific participated in this event by parking GP40 664 on the bridge above the gathering. The locomotive had been built in April 1967 as Western Pacific 3515 and was repainted as UP 664 just a few days before this photo was taken. It was retired when its lease expired in April 1993 and was overhauled by Morrison Knudsen as Kansas City Southern 4778 in January 1994. |

Description: |
Kansas City Southern train No. 53 originated in Dallas and terminated at the CSX on the east side of New Orleans. The train got from the KCS to the CSX by operating over the Norfolk Southern for about six miles. In this shot, an NS yard crew was relieving the KCS road crew at the Labarre Road grade crossing in the suburb of Metairie for the trip to Louisa Street, where a CSX crew would bring the train into their yard. At this time No. 53 frequently ran with two geeps and a road slug, but this train had GP40’s 751, 784 and 755. |

KCS Meet |
Description: |
KCS trains 55 - in the foreground - and 54 were parked across from one another on the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co. at the Labarre Road Grade crossing in suburban Metairie. No. 55 had GP40-2 799, F7B slug 4077 and GP40 786. It originated in Dallas and was on its way to the Southern's OLIVER YARD. No. 54 had GP40-2 797, F7B slug 4076 and GP38-2 4002. It originated at the Seaboard System's GENTILLY YARD here in New Orleans and was on its way to Dallas. A Southern crew had brought the train over the NOTCO five miles from L&N Junction, and the same crew would head back east with No. 55. A KCS station wagon has come over from their nearby WEST YARD with a road crew for No. 54, and would return to the yard with the crew off of No. 55. KCS and Southern cordiatd the departure of No. 54 from L&N Junction with the arrival of No. 55, so scenes like this occurred regularly. |
