The locomotives had just boosted a 45-car eastbound coal train up the 3% grade from Minturn up to the top of the pass. They had been cut into the train 30 cars back, and were now returning to their base at Minturn. At 10,221 feet, the east portal was the highest mainline track in North America. The tunnel the locomotives are entering was built in 1945; while the original tunnel, built in 1881, was on the right. |

SEABOARD SYSTEM 6643 |
Description: |
This GP40-2 displayed a split personality as it handled Seaboard System train M733, the STELLA TURN, on the former Louisville & Nashville at Cantonment, Florida - just north of Pensacola. The unit still wore the lettering and emblem of its former owner, but the number of its new one! The geep had been built as Georgia Railroad 755 and was then renumbered as Seaboard System 6643, and it was later SBD 6389 and then CSXT 6389. |

SP Train AVHOM |
Description: |
The Southern Pacific’s AVHOM (Avondale to Houston Manifest) was leaning into the curve at Raceland Junction, Louisiana with EIGHT locomotives: SSW GP40-2 7632, SD40T-2 8569, GP40-2 7623, NS SD60 6629, NS SD50S 6504, and GP40-2’s 7645, 7661 and 7633. It was common for the SP to put two or three sets of power on this train, because there were more eastbound trains than westbound, and doing this got the extra power back to Houston. |
