P&NW 23 and 25 |
Description: |
Two of the Prescott & Northwestern’s three 70-ton General Electric locos were parked in their shop building at Prescott, Arkansas while their third unit was sitting outside. The 23 was serial number 32200, built in June 1954 for the P&NW; the 24 was 32283, built in April 1955 as Valley & Siletz 11; and the 25 was 32595, a very late model unit with 720 horsepower instead of 600, built in July 1956 as Sacramento Northern 202. These three units were replaced by No. 26 – a former Amtrak SSB1200 – and were scrapped about 40 years after this photo was taken. |

Mississippi Export 49 |
Description: |
Mississippi Export 70-ton GE No. 49 was parked near the railroad’s shop at Moss Point, Mississippi. It had been built in June 1950 as Helena & Northwestern No. 70, and was named the TULLY HORNER in honor of Edward “Tully” Horner Jr. The H&NW had been incorporated in September 1948 to operate the south end of the former Missouri & Arkansas, and took possession of the line on 12 May 1949; but revenues were less than expected so the railroad quit on 18 October 1951 and the locomotive was sold to the MSE in December 1951. |
