Dunn GP8 1535
Title:  Dunn GP8 1535
Description:  Dunn Roadbuilders Railroad GP8 1535 was photographed at their material yard in Meridian, Mississippi. The locomotive was built as Frisco GP7 513 in June 1950 and was sold to Precision National Corp. in February 1975. PNC sold the unit to Agrico for use at their phosphate operation in the BONE VALLEY of central Florida, and ICG rebuilt it into a GP8 in July 1975. The identity of the 1535 changed with that of the facility, first to IMC-Agrico and then to Mosaic. It was sold to dealer Rail Trusts Equipment, Inc. in 2006, where it became RTEX 1535 and then went to Dunn Roadbuilders. Dunn was formed in 1878 as a railroad construction company in Virginia, and is now headquartered in Laurel, Mississippi.

Illinois Central Gulf
Title:  Illinois Central Gulf
Description:  Onlookers were watching the AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN as it left Reserve, Louisiana and a few of these folks were looking for souvenir pennies that had been squashed by the train! The AFT was on the Illinois Central Gulf en route from Baton Rouge to New Orleans and had stopped here to pick up journalists, most of whom had ridden up from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on a bus. The locomotive was ICG GP8 7702 and the smokestacks belonged to the Godchaux sugar refinery which closed in 1985.

ICG Engine House
Title:  ICG Engine House
Description:  Illinois Central Gulf GP8 7705 was sticking out of the railroad's recently-constructed engine house at Bogalusa, which replaced a former GM&O loco shed at this same location. The former Bogalusa depot was on the other side of the geep, and the former freight house was behind the sand tower. A few years later, the railroad replaced this engine house with a new one south of here, at South Yard.

ICG GP8 7711
Title:  ICG GP8 7711
Description:  Illinois Central Gulf GP8 7711 was entering the short spur at Florenville, Louisiana several days after a wreck which had been cause by vandalism at this switch. The switch had been tampered with, causing the southbound SHORE LINE LOCAL out of Bogalusa to collide with some cars that were stored on the spur. The 7711 was on the southbound LOCAL several days later and had just uncoupled from its train. It was entering the spur to retrieve a gondola loaded with rebar which had just been rerailed, and then the LOCAL pushed the car to Slidell. (approximate date of photo)

Mays Yard
Title:  Mays Yard
Description:  Freshly-shopped Nacionales de Mexico SD40M-2 13073 really stood out among the Illinois Central Gulf engines around it at Mays Yard near New Orleans. Compared to the spotless and glowing 13073, ICG GP8 7719, SD20 2022 and GP8 7911 look rather subdued. Of course, the 13073 will never look this sharp again! The engine had just been rebuilt from Norfolk & Western SD45 1796 by VMV Enterprises at Paducah, Kentucky and was awaiting delivery to the Southern Pacific for the continuation of its trip to Mexico.

ICG Depot
Title:  ICG Depot
Description:  ICG GP8 7986 poses on the main line beside the depot at Arcadia, Louisiana; on the Vicksburg-Shreveport line. Notice all of the LNG tank cars on the depot house track. Today this line is the KCS/NS Meridian Speedway.

Arcadia is the seat of Bienville Parish, and achieved some notoriety on 23 May 1934 after the infamous outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow had an unfortunate encounter with some law enforcement officers near here. After the shoot-out, the outlaws' bodies were brought here to Conger's Funeral Home for embalming. The "Barow Gang" had just robbed a bank in Gibsland, eight miles away, and met their demise southwest of Arcadia on Louisiana State Highway 154. Another Bienville Parish landmark is Driskill Mountain, about ten miles to the south. At 535 feet, it is the highest natural point in the state of Louisiana.
