Southern Passenger Special |
Description: |
Here was a trainload of Southern Railway attorneys leaving New Orleans for Atlanta – and points in between – on the Sunday morning after a convention in the CRESCENT CITY. The special consisted of E8A’s 6914, 6915 and 6913 with 15 cars: coach 842, office cars 9 and 2, coaches 819, 818 and 3789, coach-lounge 952, dining cars 3309 and 3869, coach-lounge 955, coaches 846, 3788, 816 and 823, and theater car 19 BUENA VISTA. The train had come in the previous Thursday evening, along with a 20-car train from Washington; but the Washington train had left at 11:30 the previous evening so its passengers could be at work on Monday morning. Notice the end door on Southern boxcar 40201. The photo was taken from the former Orleans Ave. grade crossing, near New Orleans Terminal Co. milepost 4. |

Southern E8A 6915 |
Description: |
After the PELICAN was discontinued in June 1968, it was very unusual to find a Southern locomotive at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal during the day; but here is E8A 6915 parked outside the diesel shop in 1976. The unit had been left in New Orleans because of some problem which had to be fixed before it could hit the road. It was wearing the THOMAS JEFFERSON decal it received for America’s bicentennial. The locomotive was built for the New Orleans & Northeastern (NO&NE), but its sublettering was change to AGS after the NO&NE was merged into the Alabama Great Southern in 1969. |

Amtrak Trains 59 and 1 |
Description: |
Four one-year-old SDP40F units were side-by-side at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 613 and 619 had just backed in with Train 59 - the southbound PANAMA LIMITED - while the 571 and 568 were waiting to leave at 1:00 with Train 1 – the westbound SUNSET. You could tell that the 571 was originally assigned to the SAN FRANCISCO ZEPHYR by the icicle breakers above its cab! The 613’s red emergency brake light was still on, and momentarily the PANAMA's power would head for the engine terminal where the crew would go off duty. (approximate date) |
