Description: |
Southern Pacific engineer A.V. Harper was standing in front of FP7 6458 at the Lafayette, Louisiana depot. Mr. Harper had just brought the last daily SUNSET LIMITED in from New Orleans. The train was made up of the 6458 and 6457, baggage car 6777, automat 10613, and coaches 2242 and 2369. Beginning the next day, the train would only run three times a week, but it would regain a sleeping car and a diner which had been discontinued in early 1966. |

On its last day of daily operation SP train No. 1, the westbound SUNSET was being serviced during its brief station stop at Lafayette, Louisiana. If the train was on time, it would have been between 3:17 and 3:21 PM. The locomotives were FP7's 6458 and 6457. |

Southern Pacific GP35 6588 had been added to train No. 2, the eastbound SUNSET LIMITED, somewhere between Los Angeles and New Orleans to replace an ailing F-unit, and now it – along with FP7’s 6446 and 6458 – were backing onto train No. 1 at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal as they prepared to head back west.
