Title: Southern Crescent
Description: The low morning sun illuminated the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as it sat in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, awaiting its 6:45 AM departure. The train consisted of E8A's 6902, 6910, 6908 and 6914 with 10 cars: baggage-dormitory car 706 SOUTH CAROLINA, coaches 837, 840, 819 and Amtrak 5680, sleepers 2023 WARRIOR RIVER, Amtrak 2619 PACIFIC MEADOW and 3499 ROYAL PALM, diner 3306 and dome car 1613. In less than a year, Amtrak would take over the operation of the train, and scenes like this would disappear forever.

Southern Crescent
Title: Southern Crescent
Description: The northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT was being inspected and service on what had once been Track 10 of Birmingham's Terminal Station, before continuing on its journey from New Orleans to New York City. Between 1909 and 1969 the vacant land on the left had been occupied by the station and most of its platforms. Today's Train No. 2 consisted of E8A's 6902, 6910, 6908 and 6914 with 10 cars: baggage-dormitory car 706 SOUTH CAROLINA, coaches 837, 840, 819 and Amtrak 5680, sleepers 2023 WARRIOR RIVER, Amtrak 2619 PACIFIC MEADOW and 3499 ROYAL PALM, diner 3306 and dome car 1613. In less than a year, Amtrak would take over the operation of the train and it would begin using the Louisville & Nashville station, so scenes like this would not last for much longer.

NOUPT
Title: NOUPT
Description: When Amtrak took over operation of the SOUTHERN CRESCENT on 1 February 1979 it leased all of the Southern Railway’s remaining E8A units for six months. While the Southern had maintained the locos at Atlanta and they were hardly ever seen in New Orleans during the day, Amtrak assigned them to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal for maintenance and scenes like this became common. In this view, taken about three weeks after Amtrak began running the train (as the CRESCENT), Southern 6907, 6903 and 6909 were parked outside of the NOUPT diesel shop with SDP40F 624 and P30CH 722. Southern 6908 was coupled to the 624, while Southern 6911 was behind the photographer along with F40’s 252 and 265, and P30CH units 710, 715 and 721.

Southern No. 2
Title: Southern No. 2
Description: Southern 6908 and 6913 were two of the four E-units on the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as the train was crossing the South Carrollton Avenue underpass. This was 2.6 miles after departing from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and this bridge was one of about a dozen grade separations built as a part of the NOUPT project around 1950. Almost all of the underpasses had decorative concrete beams outside of the plate girders; but these had been removed here, probably after being hit by trucks. Carrollton Avenue Station was at the left end of this bridge, and you can still see one of the stairways leading down from the two platforms to the sidewalk. (approximate day)

Description: The low morning sun illuminated the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as a rolled by the former location of Carrollton Avenue Station on its way out of New Orleans. Today's train had FIVE E-units - 6908, 6902, 6907, 6912 and 6916 - and 11 cars. Five units were very unusual, but would occasionally show up on a northbound train if a unit from a previous trip had been left in town for some attention at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal diesel shop. The tracks in the foreground were the remnants of a Kansas City Southern yard.

Description: The northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT is about 20 minutes out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and the fireman is in position to get his orders at N.E. Tower. Back in the train, the baggage man and the conductor are prepared to do the same thing. Todal's train has green E8A's 6909 and 6912 bracketing black FP7A's 6132 and 6147. During 1974 and early 1975, various combinations of E- and FP-units were not uncommon on the train south of Atlanta. The signals protect a crossing with the L&N main line, and the track in the foregrmund was an L&N branch to the Mississippi River.

The Southbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Title: The Southbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Description: Southern Railway GP7 8300 was beginning to switch train No. 1 - the southbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT - in the Atlanta station by removing the locomotives which had brought the train in from Washington: E8A units 6910, 6909, 6906 and 6901. In the distance were the units which would power the train to New Orleans - the 6911, 6902 and 6913 - along with freshly-stocked diner 3869 and dome car 1613. After replacing the power, the 8300 would remove the last five cars which had come in from Washington and then add these two cars to the rear of the train. This was a regular procedure on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, when No. 1 ran all the way from Washington to New Orleans. Dome cars did not run north of Atlanta because there wasn't enough clearance in the tunnel leading into Washington Union Station.

Southern Railway No. 2
Title: Southern Railway No. 2
Description: The fireman on Southern Railway train number 2, the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT, was leaning out of the cab of E8A 6910 to grab a set of train orders out of the train order stand at N.E. Tower in New Orleans. The stand also held orders for the train's brakeman and the conductor. Train No. 2 was nine miles and 25 minutes into its journey to New York and was powered by E8A's 6910, 6900, 6909 and 6903; a typical set of power at the time. N.E. Tower was built in 1953 as a part of the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal project, but the first tower here was built in 1899 to protect the crossing of the Louisville & Nashville with the New Orleans & Northeastern. The tower was closed on 12 September 1990, when control of the crossing was transferred to the Norfolk Southern operator in Birmingham.

Title: The SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Description: Southern Railway train No. 2 - the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT - was accelerating away from its station stop at Slidell, Louisiana behind E8A's 2928 and 6914. As built, the 2928 did not have any sublettering; but today it was wearing CNO&TP lettering on the rear of its carbody beneath its radiator grills. The 6914 originally carried NO&NE sublettering and now displayed AGS, reflecting the fact that the NO&NE had been merged into the AGS on 31 January 1969. (approximate date of photo)

Southern E8A 6915
Title: Southern E8A 6915
Description: On Monday 23 August 1976 Southern Railway E8A 6915 was the fourth of four units backing into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal to couple onto the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT when it and the third unit derailed on a switch. After a delay to rerail the locomotives, the train eventually left with three units, and the 6915 was brought to the diesel shop for an inspection, where it was photographed the next day. This was the very last E-unit built for the Southern.

Southern E8A 6915
Title: Southern E8A 6915
Description: After the PELICAN was discontinued in June 1968, it was very unusual to find a Southern locomotive at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal during the day; but here is E8A 6915 parked outside the diesel shop in 1976. The unit had been left in New Orleans because of some problem which had to be fixed before it could hit the road. It was wearing the THOMAS JEFFERSON decal it received for America’s bicentennial. The locomotive was built for the New Orleans & Northeastern (NO&NE), but its sublettering was change to AGS after the NO&NE was merged into the Alabama Great Southern in 1969.
