Description:  Eastbound down the Huey Long Bridge, this was probably the 209 Job that went to the Southern Railway's Oliver Yard. The second unit was one of 20 Espee GP9's built with a low nose.

SP-L&N Transfer Run
Title:  SP-L&N Transfer Run
Description:  A transfer run from the Southern Pacific’s AVONDALE YARD to the Louisville & Nashville’s GENTILLY YARD was at Louisa Street on the east side of New Orleans as it approached the L&N yard. The train was powered by L&N GP30 1043, SP C630 units 3140, 3146 and 3142, SP GP9R 3341 and L&N GP40 3004. Those big Alcos disappeared from here about a year later and went into storage, then were sold for scrap in 1979.

Description:  1959-model GP9's 3717 and 3703 and 1966-vintage C630's 3144 and 3141 power an eastbound transfer run over the Southern Railway's BACK BELT at L&N Junction. L&N Junction Tower, which closed in July 1972, is visible on the other side of the tank car. The large structure is the city incinerator on Elysian Fields Avenue.

Description:  Freshly-rebuilt Southern Pacific C630 3142 and RSD12 2956 were on an eastbound transfer run operating over the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad at the Walnut Street grade crossing. The train was on its way from the Espee’s AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, to the NOPB’s COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. Cotton Belt caboose 19 was on the rear of the train. Description:  It's 1:20 and an eastbound Espee transfer run is waiting at the east end of the Huey Long Bridge for the westbound SUNSET to clear East Bridge Junction and get on the bridge. The SUNSET left New Orleans Union Passenger terminal at 1:00 and will be here in about five minutes. This train has C630's 3142 and 3144, and is bound for one or more of the Espee's eastern connections. Look at all of those 40-foot boxcars!

Description:  Two pairs of 6-axle Alcos -- C630's 3142 and 3144 on the left, RSD12 2959/C630 3140 on the right -- rest in the railroad's East Bridge Yard. While these units were not very popular elsewhere on the SP, the railroad found them useful for dragging transfer runs across the Huey P. Long Bridge. All were gone from here by late 1977.

Title:  SP Transfer Run
Description:  Southern Pacific C630 unit 3143 and 3144 were on their way from the SP’s AVONDALE YARD to the New Orleans Public Belt’s COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD with the regular afternoon transfer run. The train was operating over the NOPB along the Mississippi River, and was behind Audubon Park. The SP assigned seven of these big Alcos (3140-3146) to New Orleans for transfer service between early 1973 and late 1977. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  Espee RSD12 2967 and C630 3143 were on a short transfer run en route from the railroad's tiny Three Oaks Yard in Chalmette to its big yard at Avondale. Three Oaks Yard served the American Sugar Company's Chalmette Refinery, and this is reflected in the train's consist; the first car is a Domino Sugar tank car and most of the cars are Airslide sugar hoppers. The train is running over the Southern Railway's BACK BELT at Labarre Road.

Title:  L&N GP38 4005 and SP C630 3146
Description:  L&N GP38 4005 and SP C630 3146 meet on the Southern Railway at Metairie Road, in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie. The Alco was on a short siding with a pair of GP9's, one of which had a bad traction motor. SP 3140-3146 were assigned to transfer service in the New Orleans area in early 1973; but by the end of 1977 they were all gone, replaced by GP9's.
