The Illinois Central only owned 10 U33C's, units 5050-5059 built in 1968. The 5055 was wrecked and retired in 1969, so here were one-third of the existing fleet - the 5058! 5054 and 5050 - together at Mays Yard with former GM&O SD40 914. The three GE's were retired in 1984 and sold for scrap, but the 914 survived much longer as ICG ane then IC 6063. |

Here was SD40 915 parked outside of the engine house at Bloomington, Illinois. Aiter the merger, it was renumbered ICG 6064. (approximate date of photo) |

Description: |
A couple of months before the Illinois Central–Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger a couple of railfbns from the south end of the GM&O (Jim Selzer from Slidell and Earl Hampton from New Orleans) headed north to document the railroad before it disappeared. Here, Jim Selzer was observing the engines at the railroad’s shop in Venice, Illinois. Of particular interest was the 950, which had been built as EMD SD40 prototype 434, on an SD35 frame. It was unique on the GM&O and had been purchased in July 1966 to replace wrecked GP35 614. The GM&O and the ICG may be gone, but the 950 lives at the Monticello Railway Museum as IC 6071. Missouri Pacific train YNL heads east over the New Orleans Public Belt towards its destination at the Louisville & Nashville's Gentilly Yard. YNL was a "designated chemical train" and almost all of its cars were either tank cars or covered hoppers. The locomotives are SD40's 3006 and 3045 with GP50 3516. At the location, between the Mississippi River levee on the left and Leake Avenue on the right, there were two NOPB tracks and two ICG tracks. In the distance on the right, a covered hopper is on the NOPB-New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board interchange. |

The new concrete structure was completed in 1972 and replaced the wooden trestle next to it. The train will have to reverse direction in Kenner, just west of MAYS YARD, to get to one of the grain elevators along the Mississippi River, so it has a caboose on each end. The 199510 is behind the engines and the 199596 is on the rear. |
