Texas & Pacific E8A 30 |
Description: |
In this undated photo from the early 1960’s, Texas & Pacific E8A 30 and an unidentified F7B were parked on a ready track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. At this time, the MP-TP had recently introduced an all-blue paint scheme and a unified numbering system. The 30 was originally T&P 2010, the first of eight T&P E8A units; while the F7B was one of four such T&P units (881B-884B) equipped with steam generators and high-speed (77 MPH) gearing. These locomotives had arrived here in the morning on the LOUISIANA EAGLE, the overnight train from Fort Worth, and would be returning west that evening. F7’s were frequently used on this train until they were replaced by GP7’s. (date of photo unknown) |

Description: |
On a sunny December afternoon, 6-month-old Amtrak SDP40F 615 and ex-B&O E8A 203 were being fueled and watered after having arrived on the PANAMA LIMITED. On the right is the locker building, where engine crews registered going on and off duty. The next two tracks closer to us were ready tracks, the track in the center is used by trains backing into the station (off to the right) from the wye, while in the foreground is the train inspection pit. The outbound track is on the other side of the locker building. |

Amtrak Train No. 58 |
Description: |
Amtrak E8A 208 was on train 58 – the northbound PANAMA LIMITED – at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with a couple of Illinois Central units. The locomotive had been built in October 1953 as Baltimore & Ohio 32 and was renumbered B&O 1452 in 1957. After it became Amtrak 208 in 1971 it spent most of its short Amtrak career on the IC/ICG before being retired. The 208 was one of about 80 E-units retired on 28 May 1975, and it was sold for scrap to Naparano Iron & Metal in New Jersey that October. (approximate date of photo) |

Stored Power |
Description: |
By the time this photo was taken Amtrak had retired most of its E and F units, and stored many of its remaining older locomotives. Here are six of the surviving older engines stored at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal coach yard: E8Am 436, E9A 419, FP7A's 493 and 492, and E8A's 368 and 353. The 436 was built in May 1952 as Illinois Central 4029, and was upgraded by the IC into E10 2021 in February 1969. Amtrak bought it in February 1973, and it was the only IC unit purchased by Amtrak. The 419 was built in December 1963 as Union Pacific 419, and it had the distinction of being the last E-unit ever constructed. Both of these units were scrapped at NOUPT by Precision National Corp. in 1982.The 493 and 492 were two of 14 FP7's acquired from the Southern Pacific, and the last two in existence. Originally SP 6454 and 6453, they became Amtrak 117 and 116 in July 1972, were renumbered 377 and 376 in April 1976, and renumbered to 493 and 492 in July 1977. Both were retired in May 1980 and sold to Precision National Corp. for scrap. E8A 368 was built in August 1950 as UP 929. It was subsequently Amtrak 326, 438, 368 and 469 before being retired in June 1981 and sold to PNC. E8A 353 was built in October 1953 as Baltimore & Ohio 26A and was renumbered B&O 1447 in 1957. It wore Amtrak numbers 203, 353 and 467 before being retired. |

Description: |
Amtrak 441 was one of about a dozen E-units that were stored at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Within a few months, all but one were sold to Precision National Corp. and scrapped here. The 441 was built as Louisville & Nashville E8A 794 in May 1951 and it still wore the F-unit number boxes which the L&N had added. It was renumbered Amtrak 224, rebuilt to E9 specifications in June 1974, and renumbered 441 in November 1975 to make room for F40's. When photographed here it was one month shy of its 30th birthday. |

SCL Train 94 |
Description: |
Un-named Seaboard Coast Line train 94 had just arrived in Jacksonville after its 275-mile, 6½-hour trip from St. Petersburg via Ocala and Gainesville. Train 94 disappeared four months later, with the beginning of Amtrak; but E8A 575 survived another 10 years. The locomotive had been built in June 1946 as Atlantic Coast Line E7A 532; but it was wrecked at Dillon, South Carolina in 1953 and rebuilt by EMD as an E8A. It was renumbered SCL 575 in 1967, became Amtrak 233 in 1971, Amtrak 444 in 1975 and went to Precision National Corp. in early 1981 when Amtrak sold off almost all of its remaining E-units. |

L&N Last Run |
Description: |
This somewhat-fuzzy Instamatic shot recorded the last departure of a regularly-scheduled L&N train from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. It was 5PM as the PAN-AMERICAN pulled out behind E8's 785 and 786, both former Frisco units purchased in 1965, with baggage car 1484, heavyweight coach 2555, lightweight coaches 3254 and 3250, lunch-counter/diner/lounge 2801, and 6-6-4 sleeper SHORT LEAF PINE, all for Cincinnati; plus coach 3255 for Jacksonville. L&N was one of few U.S. railroads that ran sleepers with open sections up until the beginning of Amtrak. The commemorative lettering on the nose and side of the 785 was added by railfan Jim Selzer of Slidell, Louisiana. The last southbound PAN-AMERICAN arrived at 11:25 the next morning behind E7A's 779 and 780, and they deadhead out later that day with all of the remaining L&N cars. |

With the beginning of Amtrak on 1 May, this train was discontinued and left for the very last time exactly three weeks after this photo was taken. Later in 1971 the 795 was sold to Amtrak, renumbered 225, subsequently renumbered 442 and retired in 1981. This photo was taken from the tender of Southern Railway 2-8-0 722. |

On Friday morning 4 December 1970 the Louisville & Nashville’s southbound PAN-AMERICAN whacked a dump truck loaded with dirt at the Industrial Road grade crossing in eastern New Orleans, about 10 miles from the railroad’s GENTILLY YARD and 18 miles from the train’s destination at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The lead unit, E8A 797, was set out at GENTILLY, where it was photographed by the railroad’s Mobile claim agent Bobby L. Shrum; while trailing E8A 788 was turned and took the train to NOUPT. John Batiste Nepveux |
Description: |
Southern Pacific engineer John Batiste Nepveux was born in Saint Martinville, Louisiana on 21 June 1903 and went to work for the SP (Texas & New Orleans) in 1923. By the time Amtrak began in 1971 he was the regular engineer on the SUNSET between New Orleans and Lafayette. (Since the train only ran three times a week, he was the train’s ONLY regular engineer!) Here he was, standing next to former Union Pacific E8A 929 (Amtrak 326) prior to the train’s departure from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in October 1971. He retired on 20 June 1973, the day before his 70th birthday, with 50 years of service and passed away on 29 October 1979 at age 76. (approximate date of photo) |

SOU 2923 |
Description: |
It's about 4:45 P.M. on a Friday afternoon as New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal SW8 No. 3 pulls Southern E8A's 6912 and 2923 out of the station. The two units had arrived at 3:25 on a 13-car ORANGE BELT TOUCHDOWN CLUB special, en route from Florida to Baton Rouge. The train moved from Florida to Birmingham over the SCL, and then into New Orleans over the Southern. It headed into NOUPT, then a few minutes later Illinois Central E-units 4027 and 2021 backed onto the opposite end of the train, and it left for Baton Rouge at 4:30. This was the last football special to LSU! The train left Baton Rouge the next evening, after LSU beat Florida 48-7, arrived in NOUPT at midnight, and left for Florida at 1:30 Sunday morning. The train was made up entirely of former Seaboard Coast Line cars, all owned by Amtrak: 4-section/4-roomette/1-compartment/5-bedroom 6406 PINEHURST as a dormitory (still lettered SEABOARD), diners 5916 and 5922, 10-roomette/6-bedroom cars 6636 DARLINGTON COUNTY, 6627 WEST PALM BEACH and 6637 DUVAL COUNTY, 11-bedroom car 6108 NATURAL BRIDGE, blunt-end lounge 5831, diner 5905, 11-bedroom car 6111 MOUNT VERNON, and 10-6 sleepers 6628 WINTER HAVEN, 6623 ST. Birmingham Special |
Description: |
Southern Railway’s BIRMINGHAM SPECIAL (Nos. 17/18) was down to three cars when it was photographed at the remains of Birmingham’s TERMINAL STATION in July 1970, across the platform from the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. This train consisted of FP7 6147, E8A 2926, two Norfolk & Western lightweight coaches and a Southern heavyweight baggage car. On its way out of town it would stop at Norris Yard to pick up some intermodal cars before heading north to Washington, D.C. On 11 August - shortly after this photo was taken - the train was discontinued in the State of Tennessee, and two weeks later is was abolished in Alabama as well. (approximate date) |

SOU E8A 2926 |
Description: |
Southern E8A 2926 was on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT at Slidell, Louisiana. This unit was unusual because it retained its 2900-series number when it was repainted into the new green scheme. The railroad decided to renumber E8A units 2923-2929 as 6900-6905 and 6916 shortly after it adopted the green paint scheme, so almost all of the other 2900-series units came out of the paint shop with new numbers. The 2926 was renumbered 6903, and became New Jersey Department of Transportation 4333 after it was retired by the Southern in 1979. (approximate date of photo) |

On 1 February 1970 Southern Railway train No. 48 the SOUTHERNER was redesignated No. 2 the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. On Tuesday 20 October 1970 the train went from daily to tri-weekly operation between New Orleans and Birmingham. Here is train No. 2 on Wednesday 21 October with two sets of power, because the equipment that had arrived in New Orleans on Monday evening did not go out on Tuesday morning. Notice the Automatic Train Stop contact shoe on the third axle of the 2927's front truck. ATS had been deactivated on 15 May 1970. That's the photographer's yellow Volkswagen Beetle parked on the platform. |

The SOUTHERN CRESCENT |
Description: |
Southern Railway train No. 2 - the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT - was accelerating away from its station stop at Slidell, Louisiana behind E8A's 2928 and 6914. The 2928's oscillating headlight had been removed long ago, and the twin sealed beam light had been relocated into the upper position, but the lower light opening had not very been covered over. Many Southern E-units ran around like this in the 1960's, but by this time most of the few remaining E's had their lower opening covered up or had received nose doors without a light opening. Southern Railway train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT – was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal awaiting its 7:00 AM departure with a trio of freshly-repainted E8A locomotives. Lead unit 2929 was unusual because it had received the new green paint scheme while retaining its original 2900-series road number. Most of the seven 2900-series E8’s received new 6900-series numbers when they were repainted green in 1972. Notice that the trucks and underbody tanks had not been repainted on any of the locos!
