Eight months after the Gulf Mobile & Ohio merged with the Illinois Central, former GM&O GP30 510 was parked by the sand tower at the little service area across from the former GM&O depot in Bogalusa. In the left background was a remnant of the shop buildings built here by the New Orleans-Great Norther Railroad. The ICG would eventually build a new engine house and service area at its yard on the south side of town, and the old shop area would become a shopping center named SHOP YARD SQUARE!. The 510 was never repainted as ICG 2260 and it was sold to the Paducah & Louisville in 1986. VMV rebuilt it into CSX slug 2264 in 1989.(approximate month and day) |

For example, the RIVERGATE convention center on the far left was was torn down and replaced with Harrah's Casino; while the monument in front of it, which commemorated the BATTLE OF LIBERTY PLACE, was subsequently removed. NOUPT |
Description: |
This view of New Orleans Passenger Terminal SW8 number 3 in 1974 was an image of contrasts. To the left of the engine, covered by arches, was the terminal's unused 8-track post office annex; while on the left was Railway Express Agency, no longer served by rail and occupied by a few REA trucks. Elsewhere, the image illustrated the buildings which began altering the city's skyline over the previous 10 years. The tall building just to the left of the switcher is the 14-story office tower which had been completed in 1964 as a part of the city's new main post office. To left left of this, in the background, is the building at number 2 Canal Street, next to the Mississippi River. This 33-story structure was completed in 1967 as the city's first skyscraper. On the very left is the 45-story Plaza Tower, completed in 1969 as the city's second skyscraper and located right across the street for the railroad station. On the left is the 51-story One Shell Square, opened in 1972 and still the tallest building in the city. In the 40-plus years since this photo was taken, the skyline has been filled with an assortment of other tall structures. (approximate date) |

Southern Railway Train No. 194 |
Description: |
Southern Railway train No. 194 was heading north through Slidell, Louisiana behind Southern Pacific U33C 8782, SD45T-2 9190 and a third SP unit. This run-through train between Houston and Birmingham was just south of the Slidell station, and the track in the foreground was the south leg of the wye that had served a creosote plant along nearby Bayou Bonfouca. A creosote plant was first built here in 1892 to treat wood for the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad’s trestle across Lake Pontchartrain. The plant closed in 1970 and the area was subsequently designated as an EPA Superfund site. After the creosote-contaminated soil was incinerated and the wye was removed, a 54-acre area west of the railroad station which once included the wye and the creosote plant was redeveloped by the city as HERITAGE PARK. IC GP9 9305 |
Description: |
In 1957 EMD made a number of internal and external changes to its GP9, and the most noticable alteration in appearance was the use of two 48-inch radiator fans instead of four 36-inch ones. The Illinois Central received 60 of these units in December 1957 and January 1958; and to easily distinguish them from the older GP9's (9000-9257) it put them in a new 9300-series. Here was the 9305 in Bogalusa, with GP18 9416. (approximate date) |

Amtrak PANAMA |
Description: |
Amtrak SDP40F 616 and a sibling power the northbound PANAMA LIMITED out of New Orleans over New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal track. The debris along the track are the remnants of the platforms at the former Carrollton Avenue Station. The former inbound main line had been located to the right of the train, but was removed in around 1969. Signs such as the one on the right were placed on several of the communication poles along here so that engineers on inbound trains stopping at the station wouldn't block Carrollton Junction, where the NOUPT Eastern and Western Connections separated. When NOUPT opened in 1954, the common use of train radios was still a decade or more in the future! (date approximate) |

Crown Zellerbach 302 |
Description: |
In May 1948 the Gaylord Container Corp. bought a pair of Alco RS1's to power pulpwood trains from Hammond, Louisiana 63 miles to its big paper mill at Bogalusa. The two diesels -- 302 and 303 -- cost $117,000 each, and replaced 4-6-0 No. 72 and 2-8-0 No. 301. The pulpwood train typically ran three times a week, on days when the GM&O's Shore Line Local didn't operate. One RS1 could handle 45 cars and a caboose. In 1955 Gaylord became a division of Crown-Zellerbach, but regular operation to Hammond continued until Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast in August 1969. The Bogalusa mill began using damaged Mississippi timber, so the puplwood train ran less and less often; and ended completely at the end of 1970. After that, Crown kept the RS1's to switch the Bogalusa mill. This photo was taken by an unidentified CZ employee using Jim Selzer's camera, since they wouldn't let Jim photograph it himself. (month OK, approximate day) |
