L&N S1 72
Title:  L&N S1 72
Description:  Louisville & Nashville number 72 was constructed in April 1950 and was one of the last Alco S1 units built for the railroad. Here it was photographed from the Southern Railway crossing at N.E. Tower, on its way from the railroad's Gentilly Yard in eastern New Orleans to Julia Street Yard along the Mississippi River. The auto-rack cars were parked on a Southern spur, and that large open area was eventually developed as the railroad's auto lot. This L&N track was built in the early 1950's and abandoned about 35 years later. Even though the L&N adopted a gray-and-yellow paint scheme in 1963, it continue to repaint some switch engines in this plain black scheme. The 72 was retired a year after this photo was taken. (approximate day)
