GM&O GP38AC 727
Title:  GM&O GP38AC 727
Description:  Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38AC 727 was parked under the REBEL SHED at CANAL YARD in New Orleans, between GP35’s 616 and 636. The shed had provided a convenient place to service the REBEL streamliner, which began running in 1935, and it also protected the train so it didn’t sit out in the sun all day. The REBEL stopped serving New Orleans in 1954, but the shed survived until the end of CANAL YARD’s existence about 20 years later. GM&O 727 became ICG 9546, then IC 9546. then Helm Leasing (HLCX) 3678 and then United States Sugar 404. (approximate date of photo)

SOU E8A 2926
Title:  SOU E8A 2926
Description:  Southern E8A 2926 was on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT at Slidell, Louisiana. This unit was unusual because it retained its 2900-series number when it was repainted into the new green scheme. The railroad decided to renumber E8A units 2923-2929 as 6900-6905 and 6916 shortly after it adopted the green paint scheme, so almost all of the other 2900-series units came out of the paint shop with new numbers. The 2926 was renumbered 6903, and became New Jersey Department of Transportation 4333 after it was retired by the Southern in 1979. (approximate date of photo)

GM&O SD40 915
Title:  GM&O SD40 915
Description:  In the summer of 1972, almost every railfan knew that the Illinois Central-Gulf, Mobile & Ohio merger was going to happen sooner or later. Consequently, Jim Selzer from Slidell and Earl Hampton from New Orleans undertook an expedition to photograph the GM&O from end to end. Here was SD40 915 parked outside of the engine house at Bloomington, Illinois. After the merger, it was renumbered ICG 6064. (approximate date of photo)

Southern Railfans
Title:  Southern Railfans
Description:  A couple of months before the Illinois Central–Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger a couple of railfans from the south end of the GM&O (Jim Selzer from Slidell and Earl Hampton from New Orleans) headed north to document the railroad before it disappeared. Here, Jim Selzer was observing the engines at the railroad’s shop in Venice, Illinois. Of particular interest was the 950, which had been built as EMD SD40 prototype 434, on an SD35 frame. It was unique on the GM&O and had been purchased in July 1966 to replace wrecked GP35 614. The GM&O and the ICG may be gone, but the 950 lives at the Monticello Railway Museum as IC 6071. Coal Prep Plant
Title:  Coal Prep Plant
Description:  This coal preparation plant was located along the Norfolk & Western’s POCAHONTAS DISTRICT at the community of Capels, West Virginia. This was near the railroad location of Farm, milepost 390.8, and about three miles west of Welch (m.p. 388.4) along the Tug Fork River, which can be seen on the left side of the railroad. A 3-unit set of helpers was heading west. These would be added to an eastbound train here for the run up the ELKHORN GRADE to Bluefield, and then they would return light. When this photo was taken, the mine and prep plant were operated by the Semet-Solvay Division of Allied Chemical Corp., but this is gone now. (approximate date of photo)

The 749 had been built in April 1972, became ICG 9569 and retained the same number as an IC and CN-IC locomotive. It was still at work for the Canadian National 50 years later. ICG No. 33
Title:  ICG No. 33
Description:  On 10 August 1972, the day of the Illinois Central-Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger, the ICG discontinued the regular operation of former GM&O trains 32 and 33 between Bogalusa and New Orleans; but the trains continued to run occasionally to serve a customer at the south end of the former GM&O Canal Yard. In this view taken shortly after the merger, No. 33 was entering the main line of the Southern Railway just south of the Slidell depot, to continue its trip to New Orleans. The roof of the depot can be seen right behind the loco.

This ICG trainman had previously lined the spring switch (SS) for the siding, to comply with the "Five-Minute-Rule" and once the time was up he threw it again just as his train was about to enter the main line. Setting the switch for the siding five minutes before the train entered the main line made nearby signals go red, and this prevented mainline trains from colliding with No. 33. We know this was shortly after the ICG merger because the train was short and it wasn't running extra. Once Nos. 32 and 33 were removed from the Southern timetable, these occasional trains would have to run as extras. (approximate date)

Former GM&O Buildings
Title:  Former GM&O Buildings
Description:  The photographer was standing on the Illinois Central Gulf main line, facing north, about three blocks south of the former New Orleans-Great Northern depot in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The buildings on the left of the tracks were a couple of sheds, the storeroom, and the diesel shop. The GP38 in the distance was parked next to the diesel shop and across from the depot. The large open area on the other side of these buildings had been the site of the NOGN-GM&N-GM&O locomotive shop and roundhouse. (approximate date)

Former GM&O Shop
Title:  Former GM&O Shop
Description:  The photo was taken from the Illinois Central Gulf main line, facing northwest. The large building was the coach shop built by the New Orleans-Great Northern, and was the last large NOGN building on the property. Today, the only evidence that there had been a major railroad shop complex here is the name of the shopping center which was built on the land: SHOPYARD SQUARE! (approximate date)

Southbound ICG
Title:  Southbound ICG
Description:  In 1973, the year after the ICG merger, GM&O GP38 721 and GP38-2 744 lead a southbound train past the Bogalusa depot on its way to South Yard. After the merger, the ICG discontinued the regular operation of a through train from Bogalusa south to New Orleans; so almost all of the rail traffic moving into Bogalusa came in from the north on trains like this. View from GM&O GP38-2 742
Title:  View from GM&O GP38-2 742
Description:  This photo was taken from the cab of Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38-2 742 on a southbound ICG extra as it was about to enter the main line of the Southern Railway at Slidell, Louisiana. After the IC-GM&O merger on 10 August 1972 the regular operation of ICG trains over the Southern between Slidell and Oliver Junction in New Orleans ended, but extra trains continued to run occasionally as Southern No. 835. These trains delivered carloads of fabricated reinforcing bars from one of Laclede Steels’ two mills in the St. Louis area to its fabricating plant in New Orleans, which was located at the south end of the former GM&O CANAL YARD. The steel was being used for the construction of the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME, and this particular train consisted of one MKT gondola and GM&O 2993.

Southern No. 58
Title:  Southern No. 58
Description:  A late-running Southern Railway No. 58, the New Orleans-Meridian local, was entering the siding at Slidell during a very unusual south Louisiana snowfall. The train was running with GP38 2796 and GP30 2528, and was here to meet piggyback train No. 219. The track on the other side of the 2796 was the south leg of the Slidell wye. The wye's tail track served the American Creosote Works plant, which later became an EPA Superfund site. The wye was subsequently removed.
