IC Train No. 6
Title:  IC Train No. 6
Description:  Illinois Central train No. 6, the northbound PANAMA LIMITED, was leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with an unusual set of four E-units, instead of the usual two or three. E8A 4027 wore a unique paint scheme, with a wider-than-normal orange band. On all of the IC’s other E-units, the orange band matched that of the railroad’s passenger cars, but on the 4027 the separation line was the batten strip between the upper and lower side sheets. For two years, from the time it opened in 1967 until it was superseded by the 45-story PLAZA TOWER in 1969, this had been the tallest building in New Orleans. (approximate date of photo)

L&N E7A 798
Title:  L&N E7A 798
Description:  Louisville & Nashville E7A 798 was at the engine service area in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. This locomotive had been built on 9 May 1946 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois 1100, became Missouri Pacific 27 in 1968 and then L&N 798 in June 1969. A stencil on the other side of the unit showed that it had been painted at Mobile on 3 April 1970. The 798 stood out because it retained its original small number boxes, while all of the L&N’s other E7A units had large number boxes. It was retired in November 1971 and used as trade-in credit with EMD. (approximate date of photo)

L&N E6 and E7 units which had been modified with enlarged boiler water capacity – 2,050 gallons instead on 1,050 – had nose-mounted water filler openings such as this. On the next track, NOUPT SW8 number 1 was moving a set of Illinois Central power which included E6A 4003. (approximate date of photo)

GM&O No. 33
Title:  GM&O No. 33
Description:  Something that was not seen very often on the Gulf Mobile & Ohio was a lone Alco heading across the Southern Railway's Lake Pontchartrain trestle on its way to New Orleans. The GM&O would run an extra train on regular train No. 33's schedule if there was an unusually heavy amount of southbound traffic there, or if No. 33 was running late and they wanted to get some Bogalusa cars to connecting roads at New Orleans. We don't know what the situation was here, but it made for an interesting and pleasant sight. (approximate day and month)

SCL Train 94
Title:  SCL Train 94
Description:  Un-named Seaboard Coast Line train 94 had just arrived in Jacksonville after its 275-mile, 6½-hour trip from St. Petersburg via Ocala and Gainesville. Train 94 disappeared four months later, with the beginning of Amtrak; but E8A 575 survived another 10 years. The locomotive had been built in June 1946 as Atlantic Coast Line E7A 532; but it was wrecked at Dillon, South Carolina in 1953 and rebuilt by EMD as an E8A. It was renumbered SCL 575 in 1967, became Amtrak 233 in 1971, Amtrak 444 in 1975 and went to Precision National Corp. in early 1981 when Amtrak sold off almost all of its remaining E-units.

Title:  CofG combine 390
Description:  Central of Georgia combine 390 was on an 8-car special arriving in New Orleans from Knoxville for the Tennessee-Air Force SUGAR BOWL, which was played the next day in TULANE STADIUM. This car had been built by American Car & Foundry in 1947 for service on the NANCY HANKS II. The Southern Railway “acquired” the car in 1971, renumbered it 726 and wired it for use as a tape recorder car on steam excursions. It was eventually named MAN O’WAR then WILLIAM J. PURDIE, JR., and went to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad after the NS ended its excursion program.

PCS 6
Title:  PCS 6
Description:  Office car PCS 6 had been built by the Pullman Car & Manufacturing Co. in January 1928 as Boston & Albany 99. It was one of six office cars built that year by PC&M for the New York Central System, and it was renumbered NYC 6 in May 1936. The car was assigned Penn Central number 6 with the creation of PC on 1 February 1968; but it didn’t last long and was retired on 4 August 1969. (PC subsequently had two more office cars numbered 6.) It was acquired by Knoxville scrap dealer David Witherspoon, and here it was arriving in New Orleans on a special train from Knoxville for the Tennessee-Air Force SUGAR BOWL, which was played the next day. The car was eventually purchased by someone in the New Orleans area, and it was still there in 2020, albeit in a very derelict condition. I don’t know what PCS stood for.

Southern FP7 6140
Title:  Southern FP7 6140
Description:  Southern Railway FP7’s 6140 and 6144 were arriving in New Orleans on an 8-car special for the SUGAR BOWL game, which would be played in Tulane Stadium the next day. The 6140 was flying green flags, as the special was running as the first section of a scheduled freight train. The train was on the wye at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, just before it backed into the station. All but one of the cars were owned by Nashville scrap dealer David Witherspoon, and the passengers came to watch Tennessee beat Air Force 34-13.

Northbound Southern Train
Title:  Northbound Southern Train
Description:  A northbound Southern Railway train was heading through Slidell, Louisiana behind an unusual set of six units ? five GP30’s and a GP35. When this photo was taken, three 6-axle or four 4-axle units were the normal power on road trains. Six geeps had been common on Southern trains 153/154 in the mid-1960’s, but this ended after the railroad’s first SD45’s arrived in 1967. The railroad then used four big 6-axle units to replace six geeps until the addition of trains 114/115 and 193/194 a few years later resulted in more but shorter trains with fewer locos. GM&O RS2 1507
Title:  GM&O RS2 1507
Description:  Alco RS units were never common on the GM&O in New Orleans, although they did show up from time to time, especially on extra trains. We don't know why RS2 1507 is in New Orleans, but here it is switching on the south ladder track. The yard was double ended, but it was always worked from the south end. The north yard lead was the connection with the L&N.

Road crews switched the yard with road power. Sometimes inbound train No. 33's crew would take their rest in one of the house trailers at the yard, and then return to Bogalusa on No. 32. At other times, someone would drive a fresh crew down from Bogalusa for No. 32 and take No. 33's crew back home. (approximate date)
